She wore pants.

She was single.

She helped us see the distinction between alone, (which she was)
and lonely (which she was not).

She was working.

She had an opinion.

She was an executive in television and charity.

She had diabetes, and flaws, and family tragedy.

She was terrific.

Her character was named Mary, just like her.

She was us.

She granted permission to a generation of women to be and do all those things she did first on TV, then in real life. Did life imitate art? Did she lead us? Or did all those women influence her as we found our way into the future?
