One Core Story…
Who can argue that each individual is possessed of a unique voice, expressing a special communication style? Who can argue that this divine expression is a personal and un-duplicatable gift, which should not be tampered or tainted?
Yet when an individual goes to work for an organization, their voice becomes one of many; comprising a single piece of an orchestrated communication effort. As a result, individual style must take a back seat to the larger style, content, structure and intentions of the company, group or nation.
Many times, we make the mistake of sacrificing the effectiveness of our corporate communication on the altar of individual “Sovereignty of Style.” The truth is, when you join the team, you give up the right to go your own way.
But can the individual still make a personal contribution? Happily, Yes! Once the message has been crafted, the unique way that it is delivered by every person on the team can be tailored, polished, smoothed and nuanced to fit the speaker, the listener, the circumstances, the corporation’s style and the local perspective. The key issue here is perspective: The Individual is serving the group, rather than the other way around. So the individual tells the group’s story, with his or her own best efforts.
